So we are on the search for a Washer/Dryer set because we opted to not select one from the builder. I wanted the flexibility to choose our own machines. One of our future neighbors made a really good point about delivery guys damaging your walls while trying to get these heavy machines up the stairs. So buying from the builder may help avoid that headache.
My research has continually shown Kenmore and LG as the best washers on the market. Im particularly looking for the most energy efficient models that can also hold a large capacity. I found
http://laundry.reviewed.com to be the most helpful in providing in-depth information about the performance of these models.
Would love to hear everyones feedback. What Washer/Dryer do you have? Is the pedestal work it?
So here are the contenders:
|
Kenmore Elite 41072 5.2 Cu Ft Washer/ 8107 9.0 Cu Ft Dryer |
|
Kenmore Elite 4148 4.5 Cu Ft/ 8158 7.4 Cu Ft |
|
LG WM8000HVA 5.2 cu. ft/ LG 9.0 cu. ft. Mega-Capacity Steam |
|
LG WM4270 4.5 CU FT/ LG DLEX4270 7.4 cu ft |
Not a lot to report on the progress of the house. We have landscaping, sod and a fence now. They have also stained the stairs. The replacement of the deck is up in the air, it may have to wait after settlement.

Hey Owen! So our top 'contenders' did not include the ones you guys love, so I cannot comment on which of those are the best. Your selections seem nice so I will look out for which one won! What I will say is being that we have the same model PLEASE measure the room (from more than one location) and measure your 'contenders'. We did measure so that saved us, but when we originally thought about the space being on the top level, we wanted to add a pan to the washer. Yeah...that would NOT have fit. LOL LOL Just those few inches was enough for both, the washer and dryer, to not fit. We were just speaking to our neighbors and they wanted a different (bigger) washer, and the door would open all the way with that selection in the space.
ReplyDeleteAs far as damaging the wall...I watched those guys like a hawk...no lie. Even though our walls were not painted at the time, we still did not want huge gashes all in the walls. So watch them! LOL
I felt sorry for the men hooking up the washer and dryer because they had zero room to move around but they got it done.
Im super concerned about them not fitting. I measured 60 inch wide for the laundry room. The 5.2 cu ft washer would just barely fit. The 4.5 machine is a safer bet to fit inside. I like the extra large capacity because we go through a ton of laundry. As far as the pan goes, by code we were provided one and I haven't accounted for the space it takes up.
DeleteHow wide are your machines? Have you seen any of your neighbors opt for stacking their units?
I will definitely make sure to watch closely, Im also afraid of them damaging the stairs.
Yeah, 60 is what we measured as well. We have the Maytag Bravos XL set. The washer is about 28 inches and the dryer is roughly 29 inches. They fit with a couple of inches to 'play' with. Just not enough for a pan. LOL
DeleteI have not seen any stacking units yet. For the stairs, Best Buy delivery guys really did well by covering the stairs. In our case, it would have been that bad because we still have the carpeting. But for you all, they need to make sure to cover those beauties up! :-)
Oh no, I'm concerned now! I was definitely disappointed when I saw our laundry area, it looks much, much smaller than I anticipated, and definitely not as large and roomy as the laundry room in our last house (which was 1000 sq ft smaller than this one, go figure!) We sold our washer and dryer with the house so we are on the hunt for a new one too! We had a GE set, which was high efficiency, but not front loading because we were concerned about issues with mold and reliability. It was a top loader with no agitator, and we liked it a lot!
DeleteThis time around, I'm looking at a Speed Queen set but ... now I'm kind of regretting not at least considering buying it through the builder. I think I'll visit the model home and see what model/size they have in there, see if I can live with the size and brand.
We went to do some measuring today again and it looks like the 4.5 model is the easier fit. The jumbo 5.2 model would require getting rid of the pan. I'm not sure how I feel about doing with out a pan just to go up in size. Top loader vs front it comes down to personal preference. I heard some of the top loaders are now adding more features that were only available in a front loader. In general fronts tend to be more water and energy efficient which keeps it operating cost down.
DeleteWe bought and installed the 4.2 model. It's a great set and fits perfectly.. I doubt 5.2 would have fitted in my laundry room. All the best!!
DeleteFantastic, just saw a photo of your laundry room in your blog. It looks exactly the same size as ours. 60" wide room? What model washer/dryer set did you get? The 5.2 models are 29" wide so its a super tight fit. We are also considering stacking as an alternative. At the moment we are leaning towards a 4.5.
DeleteSorry I meant we got these same ones 4.5 and these r awesome. We didn't want stacking and are quite pleased our choice :)
DeleteThe staining looks great! Beautiful color you guys chose!

ReplyDeleteProbably not, because we really wanted the extra space to accommodate outdoor furniture for entertaining. Even though a foot doesn't seem like much it really does make the deck feel more spacious. It would have to be a deep discount or a really nice upgrade for us to consider leaving it that way. Its also highly unlikely NVHomes would discount or change anything with settlement so close anyway.
